Welcome to SEMA 2016: Place and Power
Hosted by The Marco Institute for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, October 6-8, 2016.
Our theme this year is “Place and Power,” coinciding with the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings. Interdisciplinary panels devoted to landscape, boundaries, sacred spaces, power, politics, appropriation, struggle, and more join several roundtables focused on careers, teaching, and reading medieval works aloud.
We are pleased to announce our distinguished plenary speakers: Prof. Elizabeth Fowler (English, University of Virginia); and Prof. Lawrence Nees (Art History, University of Delaware).
SEMA members register at a reduced rate; please remember to join SEMA or renew your membership when you register (there is a separate box to check on the form).
All sessions will take place in the Hilton Knoxville, 501 West Church Avenue. Participants may reserve rooms at the Hilton at a special conference rate. Additional hotels downtown are within walking distance of the Hilton. Lunch and dinner spots abound on nearby Market Square.
An optional excursion during Friday lunch to the UTK Hodges Library Special Collections is available on a first-come, first-served basis. A selection of medieval facsimiles will be available to SEMA participants for browsing and discussion, beginning at noon. The exhibition will be followed by a Panera Bread box lunch for those who have reserved it. Space is limited to 25. See the Registration Form for further details.
